So I have not been posting as much lately and I wanted to let you all know that there is a good reason for that.  I am PREGNANT!  And one of the symptoms I have been experiencing pretty strongly is nauseousness and aversions to strong smelling foods!  This has resulted in me living on a steady diet of mostly toast, fruit, ice cream, pasta and Cucumbers!   However as I am getting deeper into the second trimester, I am venturing back into the kitchen and attempting to actually cook a few meals and to prepare some food for myself and my poor starving husband!

Today I made my most basic recipe for hummus.  The great thing about this hummus is that you can flavor it however in the world you would like!   I will expound on that more later, but for now…lets get to the recipe!  I kept it pretty simple today  as simple is better for my taste buds and stomach right now.  This is a really healthy snack that is good to keep in the fridge as you can eat it with crackers, naan bread, veggies, or spread it on sandwiches.  For me right now it is good so that I have something to dip my Cucumbers in!  Also it is actually much CHEAPER to make your own hummus at home…just some food for thought!

Garlic Hummus

  • 1 15 oz can of Garbanzo beans drained and rinsed
  • 2 Tbls of minced garlic
  • 1/2 of a lemon squeezed (about 2-3 Tbls of Juice)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt (more or less to taste)
  • pepper to taste
  • 3 Tbls Olive Oil (save 1 Tbls to drizzle on top before you serve)
  • 2 Tbls Tahini (ground sesame)
  • 1/4 tsp Paprika

So basically you simply blend all of these things together in your food processor until creamy and then enjoy!  It really is SO easy to make your own hummus at home and you know EXACTLY what is going into it.

My process is to mix the beans, garlic, lemon juice salt and  pepper together first and then to add in the oil and paprika to make it creamy and a little more flavorful.  I also save 1 Tbls of Olive oil for a Garnish on top.

As I stated earlier, this really is one of the most adaptable recipes EVER!

If you want more lemon flavor, add more lemon juice.

If you want creamier hummus…add more olive oil and blend longer.

If you want to add Roasted Red Pepper…go ahead

If you want to Roast your garlic instead of mincing it…by all means!

If you want to add any herb that sounds tasty…be my guest!

If you want to add Pesto instead of Olive Oil…YUM!

You get the point…this recipe is just a base from which to dive off into flavor town!
